Do these things every day to improve your mental health

When you think about getting healthier, you think of eating healthy food and doing more exercise, right? But, do you think about getting your mind in shape?

When your mind is in disarray, it can really mess you up. When you let your mind run wild, it starts thinking about all the things that could go wrong. It starts making you feel less than. You start losing your confidence. Your aura is just yucky. You could be in the best physical shape of your life but if your mind is not right, it will never let you feel it.

So, how can we start changing our mindset? We just have to start and we need to start small.

The things I’m about to tell you are not out-of-the-box original ideas but they’re small changes you can make that will make a big difference in your mindset. Let’s start at the beginning.

Create a Morning Routine

Your morning sets the tone for the rest of your day.

What can you change or add to your morning routine that will have you in a “better” mood – guaranteed? Off the top of my head: feel-good music, a good breakfast, a morning walk, put on your favorite outfit.

Mindset Check-In

Throughout the day, set a minute aside to check in with yourself. How am I feeling? What do I feel hesitant about? What can I do to mark something off of my to-do list?

Checking in on yourself will help you get back on track and re-focus.

Move Your Body

We’re not talking about rigorous physical activity. We’re talking about making time to each day to move your body in a way that feels good to you. What would a 10-minute walk do for your soul? What does a 5-minute dance party do for your spirit? If you spent a few minutes just to stretch and breathe, how much would your body thank you? It doesn’t take much – you just have to do it.

Show Kindness

What you put out is what you receive. I’m just going to cite my favorite quote:

“It is not always possible to know why people act the way they do, but I can guarantee that you will feel better if you give people the benefit of the doubt more often than not. When in doubt, be kind. It doesn’t cost anything to be kind.” – Renee Suzanne

Create a Night Time Routine

Your nighttime routine has a big impact on your morning routine.

What can you add or change in your nighttime routine to help your morning run smoother? Prepare your breakfast and/or lunch. Set out your clothes. Put your keys where they can be found. Charge your phone. Small changes like these can really make big changes.

Practice Gratitude Journaling

Lastly, physically writing down the things you’re grateful for can dramatically improve your mindset. Each day has its downs but it also has its ups. Let’s record all of that.

What were some things that were difficult today? How did you overcome those difficulties?

What made you smile today? What were some of the day’s highlights?

Tracking your day-to-day highs and lows is an effective way to identify triggers and learn how to better manage them. You don’t need anything fancy to start journaling. You can start writing things down in a plain notebook or on post-its to stick on your mirror.

If you don’t know where to start, or need help getting your thoughts down on paper, you can use a prompted journal.

Because I’ve been working on “me” for a while, I’ve put a journal of my own together. After viewing other journals, I wanted one that didn’t feel overwhelming. I didn’t want to think too much when writing so I designed it in a way that made sense to me.

If you are ready to work on your mindset and need a gratitude journal to get it together, you can shop my gratitude journal HERE. The journal is six months worth of prompted gratitude journaling as well as a monthly recap. You can also download a page for free by clicking HERE.
