I am guilty of playing the comparison game.

I’ll admit it. Lately, after mindlessly scrolling on my socials, I close my apps feeling a twinge of jealousy and disgust.

Ugh…

They have the perfect marriage.

Their house is always clean and organized.

They never yell at their kids.

They have the perfect life.

One of my best friends reminded me that “comparison is the thief of joy.” No one has the perfect life. We’re all facing battles no one knows about.

And she is 100% right.

If you find yourself stuck playing the comparison game, I want you to remember this:

Social media is a highlight reel.

On social media, we are only posting the things we want to people to see. Rarely do we ever post about the late night fights we have with our partners. Rarely do we ever post that our kid got an “F” in math. Rarely do we ever post the pictures of our messy nightstands. Rarely do we ever post about the mental breakdown we just had.

With social media, we are only seeing a tiny glimpse into someone’s life and, most of the time, we’re only seeing the positives, not the negatives.

We’re all on our own path.

It’s important to remember that everyone has their own journey and everyone’s journey will be different. Some people get married young, some find true love at a later age. Some people go to college, some enter the workforce right out of high school. Some people know exactly what kind of career they want and some need to do a little job-hopping before they can decide.

Everyone is different and no one’s path is right or wrong. Your path is as worthy as anyone else’s.

You can put the phone down.

If you find yourself becoming triggered by certain posts, it might mean forcing yourself to quickly scroll past or unfollowing that person or account. If you’re still feeling triggered, it me mean turning off your phone and putting it down altogether.

Stop wishing for a perfect life and start creating it!

  • Engage with your family and friends
  • Dive into a new passion
  • Journal

Living in your actual real life is better than living through other people’s highlight reel any day.
